Chapter 24
16 May
At nine-thirty Birdie grabbed her bag from the back of the chair and slipped on her pink and white striped thick knitted cardigan. There had been a nip in the air when sheâd arrived earlier, and it would keep her warm.
âWhere are you going? If itâs to get some breakfast, get me a sausage roll. Iâll pay you when you get back,â Twiggy said, as she marched past his desk.
âI thought you were meant to be on a diet? Iâll tell Evie,â she threatened, referring to his wife, and grinning in his direction.
âYou can laugh, but itâs driving me mad. The womanâs emptied the house of anything decent to eat. No cakes. No biscuits. No crisps. Iâm not even allowed brown sauce on my dinner. Can you believe it? A meal isnât a meal unless itâs smothered in sauce. She says itâs got sugar in it. But I donât know where. It doesnât taste sweet. Go on. Get me a sausage roll, please. Iâll put in a good word with Sarge to get you back out there.â
âI donât need your help, thanks. Iâm off to the hospital to take a statement from Sebastian Clifford. He got attacked last night in the town centre.â
He stared at her a broad grin on his face âGood for you. What made Sarge change his mind? Heâd seemed so determined to make you suffer a while longer.â
âHe hadnât intended to, that was for sure. Heâs only letting me go because I know Clifford as weâve been working together on a case.â
Crap. She hadnât meant to tell him about it just yet. Was he going to be upset that sheâd kept it from him?
âWhat case and why donât I know about it? Weâre meant to be partners. When did Sarge give it to you?â His jaw clenched as he stared daggers at Birdie.
Twiggy was easy-going and was seldom annoyed, but this had clearly wound him up.
âThatâs the whole point. He didnât know about it because I was doing it on the side. I didnât want to involve you, in case Sarge found out, and then weâd both be in trouble.â
âWhatâs the case?â Twiggy asked, his jaw relaxing and his usual expression returning.
âWeâve been investigating the suicide of Donald Witherspoon.â
âHa. So thatâs why you wanted to know about the crime scene. All that crap about filing and coming across it. And I fell for it.â He smacked his forehead. âIâm such an idiot.â
She felt the heat rush up her cheeks. Damn. She hated blushing. âSorry, I didnât mean to deceive you. Anyway, long story short, we looked into it, didnât come across anything to make us think the verdict was wrong, and then last night he was attacked. Sarge is classing it as a mugging, but Iâm not so sure, and neither is Seb. We believe it could have been a warning for him to back off.â
âWho is this guy and how come heâs investigating a case? Is he a PI?â
âHe used to be a DI at the Met, and heâs doing it for his cousin, who was Witherspoonâs wife.
